Vale: Linda McGill
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of Linda McGill, a true pioneer, trailblazer, and national icon in Australian open water swimming.
Linda’s legendary English Channel crossing in 1965 not only smashed records but also broke down barriers for women in endurance sport. As the first Australian to swim the Channel, and later with her circumnavigation of Manhattan Island, she inspired a generation of long-distance swimmers and redefined what was possible in open water.
Linda's legacy lives on in every Australian who dares to dream big in the open sea. Her fierce determination, resilience, and courage have left an indelible mark on our sport.
On behalf of the Australian Long Distance Swimming Federation, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the countless swimmers whose lives she touched.
Rest in peace, Linda.
Your strokes will echo through the waves forever.
