Derwent River Big Swim (TAS)
The Derwent River Big Swim is a ~34km ultra-distance swim from New Norfolk to Hobart, combining freshwater and tidal conditions.Undertaken individually within a conditions window, it is considered one of Australia’s premier ultra-distance benchmarks.
Recognised as the foundational swim within the Australian Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming, the Derwent River Big Swim holds a unique place in the national and international marathon swimming landscape.
Unlike mass participation events, it is undertaken as an individual challenge within a conditions window, requiring swimmers to work closely with pilots to identify optimal tides and weather.
The combination of distance, environmental variability and logistical complexity makes it one of Australia’s most respected ultra-distance benchmarks and a defining achievement for marathon swimmers.
