The Lake Argyle Swim is one of Australia’s most unique and remote marathon swimming events, set in the vast freshwater expanse of Lake Argyle in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.
Held annually on the first Saturday in May, the event invites swimmers to take on either the 10 km or 20 km course, travelling across the turquoise waters of one of the largest man-made lakes in the Southern Hemisphere. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, rugged outback landscapes and endless northern skies, the swim offers a truly unforgettable open-water experience in one of the country’s most spectacular natural settings.
The event attracts swimmers from across Australia and internationally, with competitors able to enter as solo swimmers, duos or relay teams. The course begins with a deep-water start in the heart of the lake and finishes near the Bamboo Cove area close to the Lake Argyle Resort, where swimmers are welcomed by supporters and fellow competitors. Warm freshwater conditions, typically around the mid-20°C range, combined with the scale of the lake and potential wind-driven chop, provide a rewarding endurance challenge for experienced open-water swimmers.
Beyond the swim itself, the Lake Argyle Swim has developed into a celebrated Kimberley sporting event, bringing together swimmers, supporters and the local community for a full weekend of activities including presentations and social events following the race.
The event promotes healthy lifestyles and showcases the spectacular landscapes of the East Kimberley, while providing swimmers with the opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most distinctive open-water marathon swims.
