The Lake Argyle 20 km Out-of-Event Swim offers marathon swimmers the opportunity to complete an officially observed and ratified freshwater marathon swim in one of Australia’s most spectacular and remote landscapes.
Located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, Lake Argyle is one of the largest man-made freshwater reservoirs in the Southern Hemisphere and holds a volume of water estimated to be more than 18 times that of Sydney Harbour. Lake Argyle 20km information
The swim covers 20 km across the open waters of Lake Argyle, beginning and finishing at the lake’s boat ramp. While the lake is freshwater, its vast size means swimmers can still encounter wind-driven waves and changing conditions, making it a challenging endurance swim that should not be underestimated.
Swims are conducted between May and September, when weather conditions in the Kimberley are generally most stable.
Swims are organised by Swimwild Escape, with a dedicated support boat, skipper and official observer provided to ensure the swim can be ratified through Marathon Swimming Australia (MSA).
The swim is designed primarily for experienced open water swimmers undertaking a solo attempt, though tandem solos and relay teams may also be accommodated. Swimmers may bring a small support crew onboard the escort vessel, and feeding support can be arranged during the swim if required. Lake Argyle 20km information
The Lake Argyle swim offers a truly unique marathon swimming experience: vast open freshwater, warm water temperatures, remote wilderness scenery and the rare opportunity to complete a significant marathon swim far from Australia’s major population centres. For swimmers seeking an adventurous and distinctive challenge, the Lake Argyle crossing represents one of the country’s most memorable open water swims.
