Rules & Ratifications

World Open Water Swimming Association

Marathon Swimming Australia recognises and upholds the Rules and Regulations of the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA), ensuring that all marathon swims in Australia meet the highest international standards of fairness, safety, and integrity.

These guidelines outline the standard rules, regulations, and protocols that govern open water racing events, marathon solo swims, and relays.

By aligning with WOWSA standards, MSA provides swimmers, organisers, and officials with a clear and consistent framework for ratification and recognition. This ensures that every swim recorded in the Australian Long Swims Database carries the legitimacy of international best practice.

Event-Organised Marathon Swims

  1. Events must be conducted in accordance with WOWSA rules and regulations.

  2. Event organisers are responsible for submitting verified results to MSA for inclusion in the Australian Long Swims Database.

Solo Swims

  1. Swimmers must notify MSA in advance of a proposed swim.

  2. The swim must be completed under WOWSA rules, with accurate supporting documentation (GPS data, observer logs, water conditions).

  3. Documentation is reviewed by the MSA Swim Ratification Committee.

  4. Ratified swims are formally entered into the Australian Long Swims Database as part of Australia’s official national record.
